Product Description
The engine camshaft in your BMW is responsible for opening and closing the engine valves in the cylinder head. Some engines have
camshafts placed in the engine block and pushrods to open and close the valves, while others have one or two camshafts in the
cylinder head above or next to the valves and use lifters or cam followers to open and close the valves.
Camshafts are highly machined and require proper lubrication. A lack of lubrication from clogged oil passages or dirty oil can
cause a camshaft to score and the lobes to wear down. Scored camshafts create friction and can make the camshaft overheat and
drag, while worn camshaft lobes can cause valves to not fully open. Both scored and worn camshafts rob the engine of power and
will eventually wear out the camshaft bearings and wear into the engine block or cylinder head.
Symptoms of a Worn-out Camshaft * Cylinder misfires
* Engine knocking
* Rough running engine
* Engine not starting
Engine camshafts should be inspected, and their tolerances measured if removed for engine service before reinstalling to ensure
they continue functioning properly.
