Fabrication process


On the moist wet blue, hide flaws such as scratches, scars, or parasitic damages are easy to identify.

Regarding quality, these parts of the hide are just as good as the undamaged parts; they are natural and prove that this is a natural product.

Nevertheless, during sorting, the less or more damaged hides are separated and sorted into different classes of quality.


Soft nappa for children's shoes needs a different thickness than the thick leather for alpine hiking boots.

So in shaving, the preferred leather thickness is adjusted for and the layer that is not needed is mechanically shaved from the wet blue’s back side.

The shavings are completely recycled:
They are either used to produce bonded leather products or the protein is taken out of the shavings and used for industrial purposes.


The customers’ orders, which were stored during wet blue sorting, stay together until delivery.
So, the shaved leathers go into the dye-house together, too.

The process that follows here, the retannage, is carried out according to a special formula in a dyeing drum. It consists of several different production steps:
Neutralization, retannage, dyeing, and greasing.

Only during the retannage stage (and due to the great experience of the leather technician) does the leather get its special and customer-specific character.

First, during neutralization, the wet blue’s pH-value is adjusted to a particular value for the adding of dyeing, tanning, and greasing chemicals.

To give the leather the character that is wanted by the customer and other certain technical characteristics, additional tanning agents are added to the wet blue during retannage.

They influence softness, feel, tearing values, elasticity, and other features of the leather.

During a further process, dyestuffs are added to obtain the desired color on the surface of the leather.

It is the responsibility of the experienced dyeing master to mix the right color out of a great palette of dyestuffs.

The skin grease that was removed during liming is replaced by one chosen by the tanner.
The grease chosen influences how the end product looks in terms of color, shade, luster, and feel.

During this process, the skin fibers are enwrapped by the fatliquor in such a way that the leather’s natural breathability stays intact.
Thanks to this modern hydrophobing, water cannot get into the shoe through the leather - but moisture or foot sweat, on the other hand, can escape to the outside.

So, extremely high wearing comfort and excellent foot hygiene are achieved.

State of the Art drums reduce the consumption of water and chemicals – and furthermore they use 50% less energy!
In addition to that, the entire process of liming, tanning, and retannage is controlled by a central computer.

The required chemicals are automatically weighed and added to the drums. It is a closed system and we never use a single gram more than necessary!

That increases work safety and hygiene, as well as reducing human error to a minimum and it ensures maximum safety for our environment.

In order to ensure the highest level of quality,
every ingredient is registered at the weighing station, weighed in a computer-assisted process and then carefully mixed together.

Every ingredient is given an identification code and our employees personally guarantee for its proper use.

In this way we can guarantee process stability and traceability.

At the drum, each single ingredient is checked and scanned one more time before it is added.

Employees are personally responsible for the time, place and accuracy, ensuring that the formula will deliver the desired results.


Now, the sides are piled on pallets and placed into the sammying machine.
Absorbed water is partially mechanically removed from the leather.
