How to Select Your Correct Shackle:

Shackles are available in a range of material grades, sizes and designs. Select the shackle to be used taking into the following into account:

The type and production standard of shackle to be used – d type or bow type, screw pin or safety pin, US standard or European standard

The type of pin - for example in some instances countersunk pins or square head pins may be best suited.

The full resultant imposed load - when using shackles with multi leg slings, remember that as the included angle increases, so does the load in the leg and any attachment to the leg.

Six Always and Six Nevers about the shackle:

Always store and handle shackles correctly

Always inspect shackles and accessories before use and before placing in storage

Always select the correct shackle and pin for the application.

Always allow for the full resultant imposed load. (It can increase with angles.)

Always fully tighten the shackle pin.

Always ensure that the load acts through the centre line of the shackle using spacers if necessary.

Never use shackles with bent pins or deformed bodies.

Never force, hammer or wedge shackles into position.

Never eccentrically place shackles.

Never replace a pin with a bolt.

Never fit pins on screw pin shackles in contact with moving parts of machinery which may loosen or unscrew them.

Never shock load shackles.
