DIANELLA: YESTERDAY AND TODAY

The story of Dianella’s Chianti is lost in the midst of time
Dianella’s winemaking tradition goes all the way back to the end of 17th century. From the beginning of the 19th century, Dianella’s Chianti could be found all over the best italian trattorias and restaurants and also at the Quirinale Palace’s table during Gronchi’s government. Dianella’s modern history begins in 2003, when Francesco and Veronica Passerin d’Entreves move to Dianella, starting a slow but inevitable remoderning process of the farming and tourism of the estate. The theme throughout this renovation was to respect the terroir’s traditions while always look to innovate both in the vineyard and in the cellar. This careful approach is reflected in the wine and all the other produce of Dianella’s estate. A further step in this direction was taken in 2004 when the winemaking duties were handed over to Franco Bernabei, a strong supporter of terroir, local grape varieties and Sangiovese, the grape most produced within the estate.
Terroir
THE SMALLEST AREA OF CHIANTI

Soft wines with intence aromas

Montalbano, or Monte Albano, is a hill chain spanning 16.000 hectars between Firenze, Prato and Pistoia.
It reaches a height of 627m above sea level.
Dianella is located in a perfect panoramic setting in the soft hills of Vinci, birthplace of Leonardo, an area historically
vocated to wine production. In 1796 the area was mentioned in the Bando Granducale
as a perfect place for soft wines with intense aromas.
DIANELLA’S PHILOSOPHY

To create an exclusive relationship between man and soil

Farming at Dianella means respecting the time it takes nature, the seasons and the soil to produce,
creating a unique and exclusive relationship between man and terroir.
The grapes and olives farming aim to have the perfect balance between the fruit and the respect
of the terroir in order to guarantee a constant result through time.
WE LOOKED BACK TO MOVE FORWARD

The search for a uniqueness of a wine

Nowadays we know that the uniqueness of the wine comes from its terroir and it would be foolish to
dismiss this by using chemical products.
This knowledge helped us to farm more responsibly and therefore organically.
We went back to past agricultural practices such as green manure, hand picking and everything that allows us
to have the perfect balance between a thriving plant and its surrounding environment.

SANGIOVESE

An absolute challenge

Sangiovese is the chosen grape for Chianti. Its origins and name are uncertain, some claim it comes from “Sangiovannese”, meaning from San Giovanni Valdarno, others claim it comes from “Sanguegiovese”, meaning Jupiter’s blood, from Jupiter’s Mountain, close to Santarcangelo di Romagna.
Sangiovese is the most grown grape variety at Dianella. The different biotypes and clones found in our vineyards are carefully selected and isolated by Franco Bernabei and his staff, who spend endless time studying and perfecting the varieties. There are many declinations of Sangiovese to be found in our wines, from its purest form in the Matteo delle Giuncate, the Rosè, both still and sparkling, to a wonderful mix with Cabernet Sauvignon in the Veglie di Neri. Of course it cannot be missed in the traditionally elegant Chianti and Chianti Riserva, Dianella’s history.
