Cavitation bubbles are vacuum cavities as tiny as red blood cells, or about 8 thousandths of a millimeter across. They are so small that it would take 1,250 of them lined up in a row to reach 1 cm long.

ULTRASONIC CLEANER TIPS & TRICKS

The transducer and ultrasonic tank are part of an oscillating system which needs to be free of any contact to perform at maximum working levels. Hot fluids should never be poured directly onto the tank bottom as untold damage to the transducer bonding medium will render the ultrasonic cleaner inefficient and unreliable. Conversely when the ultrasonic cleaner has been operational for long periods a waiting time is required when introducing new fluid. This again is to avoid a hot/cold scenario between dissimilar materials.
When locating the ultrasonic cleaner always keep the unit at a safe distance from sinks or water outlets to eliminate electrical breakdown. Always drain the basket or rack fully of fluid before extracting from the ultrasonic cleaning chamber.
Take care when refilling the ultrasonic chamber as not to allow excess spillage or splashing onto power mains outlets or timer controls.
Unwanted residue left after the cleaning process should always be rinsed or wiped clean from the internal ultrasonic tank to avoid corrosion on the tank surface. The operator should always be aware that it only takes a small amount of moisture contamination on the power connections to cause electrical breakdown.

How do ultrasonic machines work?
Ultrasonic tanks generate high frequency sound waves through the use of transducers and electronic ultrasonic wave generators. Typical transducers are made from piezoelectric crystals which convert electrical energy into mechanical / sound wave energy because piezoelectric crystals change geometric size when electrical voltage is applied.

 

The sound waves create microscopic bubbles of solution during periods of positive pressure, which implode and release a burst of energy during periods of negative pressure. This process is called cavitation. It is cavitation that enhances the separation of soils from substrates, often making ultrasonic cleaning faster, gentler, and more effective than other methods. Imploding bubbles travel wherever the solution goes, allowing cleaning activity even within complex part geometries and micro-parts.

When cleaning with ultrasonics the frequency of the sound waves is matched to the application. Frequencies range from 20 kHz to 170 kHz and above. The most commonly recommended ultrasonic frequency is 40 kHz. It is considered the “universal frequency” because it is generally safe for use in most applications and will produce the most intense cavitation energies to remove the most common types of contaminants (oil, grease, metal chips) from the widest range of substrates.
